From Proactiv to PCOS, my skincare journey has come a long way in trying everything under the sun to feel confident without makeup. In high school, I worked with my dermatologist to do whatever it took to try and clear my skin, but to no avail, even after Accutane. I eliminated dairy, gluten, smeared yogurt, and ACV on my face because it was a more "natural" form of healing. No matter what I did, I felt so overwhelmed because nothing was working.

It wasn't until I took some time to get to the root of my symptoms, that I was able to find some healing. Check out these simple tips to glow from the inside out!

Tip #1 - Avoid PUFAS

Polyunsaturated fatty acids quite literally can cook on your face! These oils are more chemically unstable than fully saturated oils and oxidize faster in heat or light which accelerates the aging process. Oxidative stress is compounded by ingesting them or applying them topically. This increases susceptibility to free radical and cellular damage which wreaks havoc in the body.

I have focused on limiting PUFA rich foods in my diet, cooking at home with saturated fats more often, and checking the labels of my food and skincare. Some examples of PUFA oils that I try and avoid when I can include: sunflower, sesame, peanut, and safflower oils. Instead, I've switched to more stable saturated fats through coconut oil, butter, and some avocado oils.

If you're just starting out-- be PUFA aware not PUFA scared!

Tip #2 - Invest in PUFA aware skincare

I'll be honest. I really did not think this would make such a difference in my skin, because I would say all of my skincare products and makeup come up pretty "clean" on the EWG site. However, in the past month of going back and reading ingredient lists by myself and making changes, my skin has never been more clear and bright.

I also have implemented Araza Natural Beauty for my low PUFA makeup, and I have never felt more confident in my skin. Over the past 6 weeks, I have tried all of their bestsellers, and have really enjoyed the minimalist makeup that I know is feeding my skin at the same time. My current favorite product is the All in Once Coconut Cream Foundation. It's a light-weight foundation that offers sheer to medium coverage depending on how you apply. I LOVE that it also contains SPF 25, antioxidants, and probiotics to help soften skin properties.

In addition to low/no PUFA skincare products, adding in a low PUFA makeup has really helped me feel more confident in my skin!

Tip #3 - Eat to Glow

Super simple? That's because it is! Instead of restricting foods that are "bad," I have simply added in more foods that are whole and nutrient-dense. It seems like semantics, but even just being intentional about my language and the "rules" I have placed around my nutrition, I have found so much healing. I try and make all of my meals and snacks macro balanced (protein, carb, fat) and limit PUFA oils where I can.

I am by no means perfect, but I have noticed a significant difference not only in my skin but overall health just by limiting my exposure to these inflammatory oils.

Heal more than just skin.
